A cherry tomato is a very small variety of tomato that has been cultivated since
at least the 
early 1800s and thought to have originated in Peru and Northern Chile.
Cherry tomatoes are a smaller variety of the com mon garden tomato 
that are generally sweeter than larger fruits. Although usually red, yellow, 
green and black varieties also exist, and make a colourful addition to 
summery salads.
