Dr. Brown's vs. VentAire vs. Breastflow, February 13, 2011
The Dr. Brown's have definitely been our favorite bottles overall. The flow of the Level 1 nipple was very consistent and when our daughter turned 3 months old we switched to the Level 2 with much success. It is very rare that we have a clogged nipple or a leak, although those things do happen once in a while. It is a little bit of a hassle to clean the extra parts, but the dishwasher racks are very helpful with that.
From a mother of 5...Dr.Brown's are a must!, May 3, 2009
I decided to try Dr. Brown's bottles with my baby since my previous baby had gas issues. For the first 5 months my baby did have gas and I had to use gas drops.(I believe its because I use powder formula. The country I'm living in only has powder. My first 2 babies used concentrated formula & had no gas.) If I hadn't used Dr. Brown's however her gas would have been worse. I know this because at 4 months, when I needed to change the nipples, I opted to change to another popular brand. (Because I live overseas I would have had to order them on-line and wait.) With the new bottles her gas became worse. I decided to order them and I'm glad I did because when I started using them there was definetly an improvement Now at 6 months she is gas free, but only because I;m using these bottles! I recommend these bottles to everyone!
Very Good, March 7, 2012
Last year, in preparation to our son's arrival, we bought several leading, what I will call "bottle feeding systems" (You are not buying just bottles, but also committing yourself to the accessories specific to that brand, so they are systems). The ones we chose to try were:
Playtex, although in concept very appealing, we did not like because due to their design/material it is hard to get out all of the milk and so some of it always gets wasted. Also, it is very challenging to measure out exact amounts as the numbers and gradations on the drop ins is hard to see. We stopped using these very quickly. Although, if you are using formula, these might be very appealing.
Avent bottles are generally very good, and we ended up using them a lot. Also, we purchased the ridiculesly overpriced Philips Avent Breast Pump Conversion Kit to be able to use the bottles with Medela PISA. The setup works great. The main problem with the Avent bottles is that if you forget to put in the little ring, the milk will leak all over your child. With the ring in, we never had a leak. We have used both the larger and smaller bottles and nipples N-4, and the above comments apply to all variations.
Dr. Brown's bottles are probably the best out of the three. Like the Avent, we have used both the larger and smaller bottles and nipples 1-4. With its design, it is harder to assemble the bottle without all the necessary pieces. We have never had these bottles leak. The complaints that they are hard to wash are unfounded. We never had an issue with just throwing them in the dishwasher. After about nine months of use, some of the markings are slightly coming off, not a big deal. Also, the number of parts (6 vs Avent's 5 counting the lid) is not as overwhelming as some people on here claim.
There seem to be no difference in any of the above bottles when it came to reducing gas. All of them reduced some, but not all. Likewise, our son had no preference in the nipples from one bottle to the next among these, although he absolutely hated The First Years, so we only tried it once.
If I had to pick only one of the above brands, it would be Dr. Brown's.
Great product, January 20, 2009
We have used Dr. Brown's bottles and nipples since our first daughter was born, for about 5 years.
We would not trade them for anything else. Our kids rarely have gas or colic, and rarely spit-up, even though all 3 have reflux. These bottles are the main reason, in our opinion. Likewise with the nipples. And now the bottles are safer to use, as they are offered in glass and/or bpa-free plastic versions. They are a little pricey, but well worth the investment. We would not trade our Dr. Brown's sets for anything else on the market.
Love these bottles, June 18, 2012
Cant say anything bad about them, just takes more time to clean. My son was born with stomach problems and these have really helped with gas etc.
Great bottles, January 7, 2009
We used these for our daughter--almost three now--while she was a baby. She likes the nipples on Dr. Brown's more than anything else (maybe becuse the shape or they were softer). She never had colic and rarely gas--so maybe the bottles helped. I liked the wide-necked ones best for her. I'll buy more for my new baby due in April.
Amazing bottles for breastfed babies!, September 11, 2012
My 2.5 month olf daughter is 100% breastfed & when we occasionally go out & i can't breastfeed her i use the original Dr. Brown bottles. Well last week she decided she hated them & refused them completely! I did my research on the Tommee Tees, ventaire & Dr. Browns. Hands down the Dr. Browns had the best reviews & they were 100% on point!! The first couple of times my daughter cried before accepting the bottle, but the the third time she took it right away! Woohoo!! The nipple is very soft and she has to do a similar motion with it like she does when breastfeeding. The cleaning isn't that difficult & to me it's worth the extra 2 minutes to clean all the parts, so long as my daughter accepts the bottle. This is a definite must have for breastfed babies!!!
Among the bottles we tried(Dr. Brown's Standard, Breastflow, Tommee Tippee), this is the best. Hands down., July 24, 2012
Originally, I registered for Dr. Brown's Standard Bottles, and my baby took those bottles with no problems. She was breastfed, and got pumped milk in her bottles. I had quite a difficult time just before hitting the 3rd month mark, as her suckling motions had become lazy, and her latch wasn't as great as it was in the beginning. I was desperate to solve the problem, and thought that maybe the standard neck was partly to blame, because it does not encourage a big wide mouth when latching on to the bottle's nipple. So my quest for the wide neck bottle started.
First, I tried a Breastflow bottle. It was too much trouble than it's worth. And I didn't like that there you almost had to force all of the milk out, since it wouldn't just naturally empty out on its own. Breastmilk is like liquid gold, and especially in these early months when I was just establishing my supply, I didn't have any milk to spare!
Then I tried the Tommee Tippee bottles. These were just terrible. They were overpriced and did not work. My daughter almost never spits up, and she had projectile spit up when we tried these bottles. A more detailed review here:[...] So needless to say, these bottles went back.
Then finally I tried the Dr. Brown's Wide Neck. They worked perfectly for my baby. The wide nipple + the way we administered the bottle encouraged and 'trained' her on a wide latch. The nipple flow was always consistent, and she rarely ever got gas after we started using these bottles. My breastmilk supply was successfully established, since her latch and suckling motions improved. She started sleeping through the night before 12 weeks, and started holding her bottle on her own at just over 4 months. And now, she's 8 1/2 months and STILL on breastmilk and Dr. Brown's Wide Neck Bottles! The extra parts are worth it, and it's not even a big deal to wash, really. So happy that I tried this product.
great bottles, May 22, 2012
I have buy the small to the large and and standard in Dr Brown's bottles let me tell you all to wash the standard its parts is hard especially if you tried. But the wide neck bottles easy to wash. No leaks if you tighten the bottles properly. Great bottles love them and soft nipples.
Dr. Brown's Wide Mouth Bottles, April 14, 2012
We used these bottles from when he was born and he won't touch any other kind. We love the feel of the nipple. It is soft for his little mouth. He goes from his mom's nipple to his bottle without any problems. You just have to pay attention to when you put the bottle together. Make sure that you secure the parts well together before you put the top on. If not, it will leak but great bottle for babies.
Best Bottles EVER!, March 21, 2012
I read all these reviews about it's a hassle to clean, WHO CARES?! Honestly, I have a son who has colic and it's amazing how calm he is.Regular bottles made him spit up constantly, hiccup like crazy and the whole time we'd feed him he'd clutch his tummy from gas pains. Now he does none of that!!! He doesn't cry, no spit ups, no hiccups everything is gone. He's content and happy, sleeps better, still has a little gas every now and then but what baby doesn't? It highly recommend these bottles!! It's worth taking some time out of the day to hand wash some bottles for my son.
Great product!, February 26, 2012
Our son really likes these bottles, we got ride of all the other brands we had and we're purchasing more of the Dr. Brown's!
Drastic difference in gassy baby, December 1, 2010
I was using Avent bottles because I bought the Avent breast pump. (Which I love by the way). I was having a horrible time with a gassy baby. I refused to believe it was because of the bottles because I loved how simple the avent bottles are to put together and wash.
After complaining to her pediatrician about her gas, she suggested Dr. Brown's bottles. I decided to see what the hype was about. (My friends also swear by them.) It was an instant difference. I have sanity now! She doesn't scream with gas pains after feeding. For all the complaints about the "parts" inside, I don't see the problem. Compared to Avent which has 4 parts, there's just one more. There is a nipple, rim, bottle, round object, and a tube. It's not really that big of a deal to me.
I like the wide neck bottle because it fits into my diaper bag better since it's shorter. It also seems like the baby's "latch" looks more like a breastfeeding latch than the other skinny bottles. (I might be crazy - that's just my impression.)
If there's a negative it would be that they leak occasionally. I am not taking a star away because I believe that's just a side effect of the way the anti-colic bottles have to be designed to release air out somewhere besides the end of the nipple. They leak just as often as the polypropelene Avent. It's always easy to fix by unscrewing it and screwing it back together.
